In Old California (DVD)

In Old California (DVD)

With its slight resemblance to Destry Rides Again (1939) — probably not entirely coincidental — this rousing Western from Republic Pictures remains a joy throughout. John Wayne plays Tom Craig, a mild-mannered druggist from Boston who opens a shop in wild and woolly Sacramento shortly before the Gold Rush. The town is “owned” by the Dawson brothers, Britt (Albert Dekker) and Joe (Dick Purcell), who poison Craig’s tonic when saloon hostess Lacey Miller (Binnie Barnes) takes too much of an interest in the handsome newcomer. Town drunk Whitey (Emmett Lynn) has one drink too many, and all of Sacramento is soon in a lynching mood. The news of “gold in them thar hills” saves the druggist in the nick of time, but his business is destroyed. While everyone is heading for the gold fields, Craig prepares to leave town with snobbish debutante Ellen Sanford (Helen Parrish), whom he intends to marry. News of typhoid fever among the prospectors changes his mind, however, and the man once referred to as “a human hitchin’ post instead of a two-legged man,” risks his own life to save the suffering populace. The Dawson brothers, meanwhile, plan to hijack the medical supplies and sell them to the highest bidder, but when Britt Dawson learns that Lacey is helping the sick and may be stricken with the disease herself, he has a change of heart and eventually confesses to spiking Craig’s medicine. Cast against type for most of the film, John Wayne fails to make his amiable druggist entirely believable but remains simply John Wayne throughout — which is as it should be. Binnie Barnes is rowdy and fun whether leading a chorus of “California Joe” by Johnny Marvin and Fred Rose, or jealously interrupting a tte–tte between Wayne and 19-year-old Helen Parrish. Usually cast as glacial “other women” in Hollywood films, the British-born Barnes had actually begun her professional career touring Europe and South Africa with bucolic American headliner Tex McLeod, which was as good a preparation..

Travels (CD)

Travels (CD)

Crossover Jazz Vinyl LP – Now well into its gliding Brazilian-tinged mode, the Pat Metheny Group hits the road, as this two-CD set catches the band live in Dallas, Philadelphia, Hartford, Sacramento, and Nacogdoches, TX. Percussionist Nan Vasconcelos is still listed as a “special guest,” but ever since Wichita Falls, he had not only been a part of the group, he was the transforming element in the Metheny “sound,” adding his various shakers, effects and ethereal vocals. Sidekick Lyle Mays gets deeper into floating, glistening synthesizer textures, but he is still able to take formidable and touching solos on acoustic grand piano. Still experimenting with new hardware, Metheny’s work on a detuned guitar synthesizer gives the live “As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls” an exotic Balinese-like sound. Other highlights are the hard Brazilian grooves on “Straight On Red” and “Song for Bilbao,” as well as the trademark Metheny glide of “Are You Going With Me?” — and the brief title track has a winning, guileless simplicity much like that of Keith Jarrett in a prayerful mood. If you liked the popular Offramp, you’ll fall for Travels, too, but get the former album first. – Travels (CD)

DQ University

July 29, 2009

Help Save California’s Only Tribal College. THE OFFICIAL NAME OF THE INSTITUTION IS D-Q UNIVERSITY. THE COLLEGE DERIVES IT’S NAME FROM TWO IMPORTANT FIGURES FROM NATIVE HISTORY. THE “D” STANDS FOR THE NAME OF THE GREAT PEACEMAKER WHO INSPIRED THE FOUNDING OF THE IROQUOIS CONFEDERACY; THE FULL NAME SYMBOLIZED BY THE “D” IS USED ONLY IN RELIGIOUS CONTEXT. THE “Q” REPRESENTS QUETZALCOATL, AN AZTEC PROPHET, WHO SYMBOLIZES THE PRINCIPLES OF WISDOM AND SELF-DISCIPLINE.
History of D-Q University and Surround Area. For Thousands of Years The region Surrounding Davis, where D-Q University is Located, was the home of Wintun Peoples (Poowin and Patwin). Later, the area became known as Laguna de Santos Calle under a Mexican Land Grant. In 1868 Davisville was founded and named after a local farmer, Jerome C. Davis. The “ville” was removed in 1907, and the name officially changed in 1917 when the city was incorporated. D-Q University is Located on 643 acres on the site of a FORMER ARMY COMMUNICATIONS RELAY STATION. Prior to 1951, when the Communication station was built, the site was used for Agriculture. The Army Constructed Several buildings in the Center of the Land. In 1970, the Army Vacated the Site which then became FEDERAL SURPLUS PROPERTY PLACED UNDER THE JURISDICTION OF THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH, EDUCATION AND WELFARE. At this Time a Number of Native Americans and Chicanos ESTABLISHED A CLAIM ON THE SITE WITH THE INTENT OF FORMING A SCHOOL CONTROLLED BY INDIGENOUS PEOPLES. AFTER LENGTHY NEGOTIATIONS, THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT AWARDED D-Q UNIVERSITY TITLE TO THE LAND IN 1971, UNDER PROVISIONS OF THE FEDERAL SURPLUS PROPERTY LAWS. Native Peoples Gained The FIRST AND ONLY INDIGENOUS-CONTROLLED INSTITUTION OF HIGHER LEARNING LOCATED OUT SIDE A RESERVATION IN JULY 1971, WHEN D-Q UNIVERSITY OPENED IT’S DOORS FOR THE FIRST CLASSES. IT ALSO REPRESENTED THE FIRST TIME THAT THE DIVERSE GROUPS OF NATIVE RACES ON THE AMERICAN CONTINENT SUCCESSFULLY WORKED TOGETHER ON A PROJECT, DESPITE VAST LANGUAGE BARRIERS, GEOGRAPHICAL DIFFERENCES AND OUTSIDE PRESSURES. ON NOVEMBER 4, 1978, D-Q UNIVERSITY BECAME INDIAN-CONTROLLED. THE CAMPUS PROPERTY CONTINUED TO REMAIN IN TRUST UNTIL APRIL 2, 2001 WHEN THE PROPERTY WAS TURNED OVER TO THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES. PAST ACTIVITIES AT D-Q UNIVERSITY

D-Q UNIVERSITY HAS GRADUATED MANY NATIVE AMERICANS, CHICANOS AND STUDENTS FROM VARIOUS ETHNIC GROUPS, WHO HAVE GONE ON TO HIGHER ACHIEVEMENTS IN THE PUBLIC, PRIVATE, AND TRIBAL SECTORS. THE COLLEGE HAS ALSO SPONSORED TEACHER TRAINING PROGRAMS, COURSES, SEMINARS, CONFERENCES, AND SPECIALIZED OFFERINGS.
